The Lightest Laptop Computer

Once I decided to seek for the lightest laptop computer, and after several hours of searches I was quite tired of wandering to and fro. “Ultra-light laptop computer”, “light-weight laptop” – I gave a try to various search queries ever available.

The thing I found was a range of old notebooks – one, two, even three years old. And lots of spam web-sources which seized my search keys for producing a dynamic web-page. Thus I was forced to visit the producers’ websources for learning real product properties to know who really offers the ultra-light laptop computer. Luckily, at last I managed to compose a list of light-weighing laptops - thus you can look through it.

The Fujitsu LifeBook Q2010 is about 2,2 pounds in its weight, having a 12,1-inch display. Unluckily, it possesses a 1,2GHz processing unit and only a 30GB hard drive, while being supplied with a DVD burner and XP Pro.

The Dell Latitude D420 also possesses a 12.1-inch display and is considerably less costly, but it has only 1,2 GHz of processing unit and a weak (4200rpm) 30 GB hard drive and a weight about three pounds. Also it is supplied with a 512MB DDR2-533 SDRAM on integrated DIMM. It’s a good step to add more to 1GB or to 1,5GB, but the set with 2GB random access memory is an additional USD 1000 to the price (perhaps due to the fact that it demands 1,5 GB DIMM).

The Sony VAIO VGNTX750PB is about 2,75 pounds in weight. It’s display is smaller (11,1 inches) than of others, it possesses a 1,2 GHz processing unit, but also contains an 80GB hard drive and a dual-layer DVD-burner. Its random access memory can be upgraded to 1,5 GB.

The Lenovo ThinkPad is supplied with 1.66GHz Core Duo processor, a 60 GB hard drive and a 12,1 inch display. Optionally, the memory can be upgraded to 4 GB, but the machine has no DVD drive. Opting for a ThinkPad X6 Ultrabase you should add a CD or DVD burner. This is the only obstacle to its portability.

The Averatec AV2260, which is about 4 pounds in weight, is supplied with a 1,8 GHz AMD Turion 64 Mobile, 1GB installed DDR-SDRAM, a 12,1 inch display, a dual layer DVD burner, and an 80 GB hard drive. Thus this model is similar to a more weighty Son on steroids. This one is the least costly of all the six mentioned notebooks belonging to this class. The other models are sold for about $1200 to $2300, dependent on the manufacturer and components. Being a bit weightier at 4.4 pounds, the HP Compaq has its common advantage of a display which is 14,1 inches wide. It is supplied by a 1,83 GHz Intel Core Duo processing unit, 1GB of DDR2 SDRAM, a DVD burner (optical drive) and a 60GB hard drive. The most inexpensive model in this range was not less than $1259,99. The majority of types I investigated were sold with 80 GB drives and DVD burners, but not jut DVD readers which were supplied by 60 GB of hard drive place.

As it appears from the list, the lightest laptop of the range is Fujitsu. If you actually have a necessity in an ultralight laptop computer you have to say good-buy to some useful properties. As for me, a machine with more performance and features would suit better. The small display sizes are also not very comfortable – and they are a feature of this category.

Like with any computing device purchase it’s essential for you to thoroughly analyze the purposes for which you buy the unit. Ultralight laptop computers are convenient as they are not an obstacle when considering a travel, but there is an issue of them taking the essential components away preferring them to weight. Besides tendency of being more costly in price, ultralight laptops are commonly supplied with smaller displays and smaller keyboards than their weightier counterparts. The actual question you have to pose to yourself is not just “What is the lightest laptop?” but rather "What is the lightest laptop for my computing purposes?"
